In 1980, PND began development of its OPEN CELL SHEET PILE™ (OCSP™) structure with construction of two temporary bridge abutments on the North Slope of Alaska. The OCSP™ bulkhead is used primarily on docks and similar structures and provides low costs combined with high performance. The system has been used effectively in locations that are susceptible to severe ice, soft soils, deep water, scour, and seismic events. The OCSP™ provides high load capacity and requires minimal sheet pile toe embedment. It is easily modified for increased loading or unforeseen conditions and accommodates long-term settlement.
The OCSP™ design provides cost savings for development in ordinary conditions and provides savings that are particularly evident in difficult environments such as deep water and soft soils. The minimal cost of the structure is the result of a straightforward design, a simplified construction process, and low maintenance costs.
The OCSP™ system consists of vertically arranged driven flat sheet piles that act as membranes to retain soil, ideal for civil and structural applications. PND has provided design services utilizing OCSP™ structures for numerous bridges throughout Alaska, Texas, and the Pacific Northwest.
PND, which holds patents on the system, received the prestigious NOVA Award from the Construction Innovation Forum for its OCSP™ system in 1998.
PND has spent years testing, observing, and refining the OCSP system and holds all related information to be proprietary. The OCSP system is patented, holding U.S. Patent No. 10,024,017 B2; U.S. Patent No. 10,145,076 B2; and Canadian Patent No. 2,714,679 B2.
